The unrated version is notorious for a scene where fellatio is witnessed by 'Meg Ryan (I)' (qv)'s character, although it was later revealed in the film commentary that the actress was using a dildo.
'Nicole Kidman' (qv) turned down the role of Frannie because at the time she was going through her divorce from 'Tom Cruise' (qv). She thought the role would have been too emotionally draining. She does however take a co-producing credit.
'Nicole Kidman' (qv) was originally cast as Frannie Thorstin.
'Jane Campion' (qv) had tried to direct the film ever since the book was published in 1996.
'Mark Ruffalo' (qv) went on undercover assignments with police officers to prepare for his role.

In the Cut goofs

CONT: In the final scene, when Frannie is walking home from the lighthouse after escaping the killer, she is barefoot. When she reaches the garden of her apartment building, she is wearing sandals. When she reaches her apartment, she's barefoot again.
CHAR: When Det. Malloy first meets Frannie, he says the day of the murder was Saturday the 15th. Later, when Frannie is in the car with Malloy and his partner, the partner says the date of the murder was the 11th.
CONT: After Frannie and Malloy's first intimate encounter, Malloy is dressing as Frannie realizes she has lost one of the charms from her bracelet. Malloy is buttoning his shirt and working on putting on his tie. When he turns to help Frannie look in the bed, his shirt and tie are on perfectly. Yet the next shot has him again adjusting the shirt & tie with the collar up.
CONT: When Detective Rodriguez splashes Malloy with his water pistol, a girl with a short skirt and red purse hurries by them. Half a minute later, when Malloy enters the car, the same girl walks by again.
CONT: When Malloy gives Frannie his card, she uses a pushpin to secure it on her wall. Later in a close-up when she is at Pauline's apartment holding Malloy's card, there's no pinhole in the card.
