Torn Curtain Storyline

American scientist Michael Armstrong defects to Eastern Europe, followed by his reluctant fiancée Sarah Sherman. It's no surprise to learn that the defection is not genuine, and that his real mission is to steal a secret mathematical formula from a professor in Leipzig.

Torn Curtain trivia

SPOILER: The scene where Gromek is killed was written to show how difficult it really can be to kill a man.
According to the book "It's Only a Movie", 'Brian Moore (III)' (qv) was chosen to write the screenplay, but shooting began before Hitchcock was satisfied with the script, dictated by the limited availability of 'Julie Andrews (I)' (qv).
Hitchcock wanted to cast 'Eva Marie Saint' (qv), whom he had previously directed in _North by Northwest (1959)_ (qv) starring 'Cary Grant' (qv). The studio forced him to cast 'Julie Andrews (I)' (qv) in the female lead.
'Bernard Herrmann' (qv) wrote the original score, but Universal Pictures executives convinced Hitchcock that they needed a more upbeat score. Hitchcock and Herrmann had a major disagreement, the score was dropped and they never worked together again.
Was reportedly one of 'Alfred Hitchcock (I)' (qv)'s most unhappy directing jobs.
